I think the loss of "cause it's on" viewers would be huge
Most people outside a small group of rabid fans will watch stuff because it's on, but wouldn't pay for it. If they had to pay for ESPN to watch high profile games, they would be more likely to just give up on CFB than pay for it. Even less likely to purchase a game. I would not assume an audience of more than 25% of the audience for a game in the current model.
It would also be a huge detractor from the rights contracts. The rich get richer divide would expand even more, and the loss of fan interest overall would be significant.
